Aloha is like many Hawaiilan words--it is made up of small ones. The most inportant one here is 'ha,' meaning the beath of life. Aloha is the verbal version of the traditional physicsl method of greeting one another. It is called honi, the touching of foreheads and exchanging of breath. No, the Kanakas did not rub noses.
